Gas Opportunities of Shetland as Hot Topic at Oil & Gas UK’s Breakfast Briefing

The importance of the west of Shetland province as a significant new gas frontier is the theme for Oil & Gas UK’s forthcoming breakfast briefing which features guest speakers from an international oil and gas operator, a European integrated oil and gas company and a major bank. Sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland, the event takes place on December 6 at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre from 7am to 9.30am.

This final Aberdeen breakfast briefing of 2011, chaired by Oil & Gas UK’s operations director, Paul Dymond, will provide delegates with the chance to learn more about the challenges faced by companies operating in the demanding conditions of the north east Atlantic and the substantial potential of the region.

Total’s flagship west of Shetland gas development, Laggan-Tormore, will feature in the presentation given by Philippe Guys, managing director of Total E&P Ltd, who will also outline the company’s overall strategy for UK investment with support from business development manager, Paul Mason.

The managing director of OMV (U.K.) Limited, John Austin, will then speak from the perspective of one of the smaller European integrated oil and gas companies about the region’s investment opportunities and challenges, including the combination of technical, commercial and political factors affecting development.

Andrew Buglass, head of energy at The Royal Bank of Scotland, is the morning’s final speaker and he will discuss the crucial role that the banks can play in ensuring suitable financial support is available to help companies realise the full potential of this challenging prospect.

Paul Dymond, Oil & Gas UK’s operations director, said: “In March 2010, when the Department of Energy and Climate Change approved the £2.5 billion development of the Laggan-Tormore gas field, it unlocked an exciting new frontier area of the UKCS. Total’s gas fields alone are estimated to contain more than one trillion cubic feet of gas.

We estimate that the west of Shetland province holds a fifth of the UK’s gas reserves and the infrastructure that Total is investing in is critical to the development of this resource. Laggan-Tormore therefore represent an exciting step in our push towards maximising recovery of the nation’s gas reserves to make material improvements in the security of UK energy supplies.

In the light of recent announcements regarding other major projects west of Shetland, the information shared in this breakfast briefing promises to provide delegates with an early insight into the province’s potential from three very different perspectives.”
