Heerema Orders New Hydraulic Underwater Hammer from Menck

Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) signed a contract with offshore pile driving specialist Menck for the construction of a 3500kN hydraulic underwater hammer. The new hammer, the MHU-3500S, will be the world’s biggest and heaviest.

At 25 meters long and with a 192 ton ram delivering 3500 kJ of energy, the hammer will be eminently suited to drive piles up to 500 meters deep into the toughest of seabeds.

Senior Asset Equipment Manager Chris de Ruiter says: “The new hammer is a product of the strong ties between Heerema and Menck. They go back almost 50 years to the very early days of Heerema, when we started with lifting and pile driving. Heerema has always been innovative, entrepreneurial and a setter of world records in pile driving. This new hammer will enable us to also serve our customers in more demanding circumstances.”

HMC expects delivery of the MHU-3500S as early as January 2013.
