Initiative for Cooperation of North-east Teachers and Oil & Gas Industry

Teachers and career advisors were invited to see firsthand the innovations in the energy sector from the businesses behind the leading technologies. The ‘Energising Schools Initiative’ took place on 15 November at this year’s SPE ICoTA European Well Intervention Conference and Exhibition.

Organised by SPE Aberdeen and ICoTA, the visit included Aberdeen City & Shire teachers and representatives from Skills Development Scotland. The aim of the initiative was to explore collaboration opportunities between local schools and the oil & gas industry and further strengthen the links between education and industry.

Representatives had the chance to meet the 47 exhibitors at the event and hear first-hand the challenges and opportunities currently facing the oil and gas industry.

Colin Black, SPE School Careers Guidance Chairman (Aberdeen Section) & Optima Solutions UK Director, said: “The initiative aimed to facilitate discussions on how industry and schools can collaborate to support pupils and prepare them for a career in the energy sector.

Discussions were held regarding the Curriculum for Excellence and the issues teachers are faced with in supporting pupils entering employment.

The teachers also had the opportunity to attend the conference keynote address to help get a flavour for the sector. Whilst lectures took place, dedicated SPE and ICoTA guides gave teachers a tour of the exhibition, allowing them to meet the people who design, patent, develop, build, service and operate the latest Well Intervention technologies.

Mr Black continued: “At other events we mainly focus on pupils; however we realise that to make a greater long term positive impact, industry must also work closely with Teachers and Career advisors. This is a global energy industry with many opportunities for young people and through events like this one, SPE Aberdeen aims to continue to provide background information, potential curriculum projects, industry facts, guidance on career paths and information on how to enter this great industry.”
