The Research, Development & Innovation department is seeking a Principal Research Engineer Mechanics & Systems, leading an expert team of mechanical engineers.
THE ROLE
As team leader, heading a team of 2 to 4 domain experts, the Principal Research Engineer is the technical ambassador for the Mechanics & Systems team towards the internal clients and stakeholders from the business units, as well as in the collaboration with suppliers and knowledge institutes. Next to that your role is building and maintaining a collaboration network, initiating and realising relevant research projects and the developing a technology roadmap for the expertise area.
You are eager to follow the latest developments regarding mechanical engineering, power and propulsion systems, alternative fuels, energy conversion technology and data driven maintenance within and outside the company. The role of the entire team is to understand the fundamental principles of these technologies. You are motivated to maintain an active portfolio of research projects and to coach experts in your team to generate high quality project outcomes.
The research is conducted in projects in a team as well as individually. You are a hands-on foreman of the team and you actively support the integration and implementation of the new technologies in new vessel concepts and future product development. You participate in European and national funded collaboration R&D projects where you represent Damen. In these projects you work together with other internal stakeholders from the business, as well as suppliers and knowledge institutes. You will have lots of opportunities to build and maintain your own network. This creates an interesting and challenging mix of research, science, management, leading a team, creativity and communication.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Developing a technology roadmap for the knowledge area of Mechanics & Systems including topics as alternative fuels, energy conversion, power and propulsion systems and data driven maintenance;
- Setup, undertake and supervise (fundamental) research projects supporting the innovation of our product range. This also involves gaining support for your ideas, manage the stakeholders and share the obtained knowledge;
- The development of high-end technology and knowledge and the dissemination thereof within Damen;
- Maintaining a network of and collaborate with knowledge institutes and suppliers;
- Managing and coaching 2 to 4 professional experts within you team.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- At least 8 years of relevant working experience;
- Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Technology or equivalent with academic working and thinking level;
- Track record in systems thinking, system simulations, (maritime) propulsion systems and system integration;
- Affinity with ships and a motivation to contribute to the energy transition in the maritime sector;
- Coaching and managing skills are required;
- Able to create overview and prioritize the work of the team.
