3rd Engineer Officer

For 150 years, Holland America Line has been a recognized leader in cruising. Our fleet of 11 modern classic ships offers more than 500 sailings a year visiting all seven continents. We are currently seeking for a 3rd Engineer Officer that performs as a Supervising Engineer.

The Engine Department is responsible for the Engine room, as well as for the technical and interior maintenance of the ship and is staffed 24 hours a day by licensed engineers. The team monitors and maintains the vessel's state-of-the-art systems: power plant, propulsion, environmental systems, HVAC systems, and regular technical maintenance.

In this position you will assist the Officer in Charge of the Engine Watch by monitoring the safe and proper operation of all main propulsion and auxiliary engines and the systems, machinery and equipment in the engine room as directed by Staff Engineer Officer or the Senior Watchkeeper.

As a 3rd Engineer Officer your key responsibilities entail:

  • Maintaining proper operation of the vessel’s main and auxiliary machinery and equipment, including the potable water system to USPH standards, and assigned operating station in the engine room.
  • Maintaining accurate entries in logbooks and planned maintenance system as required.
  • Performing planned maintenance in accordance with the maintenance schedule in AMOS.
  • Standing and supervising a watch keeping shift as Senior Watch Keeper in Charge of the Watch, which includes monitoring and, where necessary, adjusting all vital parameters/settings to obtain/maintain a safe and economical sailing; calling for a red manning; fuel counter, if arrival; accurately maintaining logs; monitoring alarms; and effectively communicating with the bridge.
  • Working and communicating effectively with Deck and Hotel personnel.
  • Prioritizes ethics and compliance including health, environmental protection, safety and security in day-to-day duties.
  • Participating in weekly emergency drills.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Staff Engineer Officer or Chief Engineer.

Qualifications and Experience required:

  • National Seaman’s Book (will be able to be processed via Holland America Line)
  • Engine OOW Certificate of Competency, unlimited national as accepted by the Flag State of the Vessel
  • Completed Cadet training, preferable on deep sea trade vessels or cruise vessel.
  • Proficiency in English and Dutch, both written and verbal. Prior knowledge of safety and seamanship, electronics, machining and fabrication, and general maintenance skills.
  • Prior work experience with HAL preferred
