Hans Scheefhals Project Lead HVDC TenneT

VIDEO: Hans Scheefhals about the mega projects at TenneT

The next coming years, TenneT will develop CO2 neutral electricity systems and maintain them for the next 40 years. As grid operator, TenneT is developing a solid, reliable network at sea to bring all this energy to shore. Some call the construction of these large scale wind parks the largest and most ingenious programme of the Netherlands since the Delta Works. An important first milestone is Borssele Alpha, the first ‘Net op Zee’-project that is still operational. Besides Borssele, 5 other wind parks are being connected at sea until 2030. Together, these parks will generate more that 10 GW of electricity. IJmuiden Ver is one of the 5 wind parks that Hans Scheefhals is the Project Lead HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) develops. IJmuiden Ver will be 3 times the size of Borssele. Hans was our guest in the online session ‘Careers in Offshore Wind’ on 10 December.

“Of this scale, we already had to build 5, and recently, the European Commission has decided not to expand to 60 GW but to 300 GW, which is huge. 2 GW is 2000 MW, which is approximately providing 1,5 milion households with electricity for one year”.

Opportunities for businesses? “Yes indeed! And if you think that for my project alone we will need about 60 people but for the supplying companies this is much bigger. Think of maritime companies, logistics, steel suppliers, large shipyards. It’s enormous”.

Watch the interview with Hans in which he explains what is on the agenda and what large projects are in the planning and what type of people are necessary to execute the project.
