Oil & Gas UK Announces New Appointments within Its Board

Oil & Gas UK, the representative organisation for the UK offshore oil and gas industry, yesterday (4 April 2012) announces a number of new appointments within its expanded Board.

Effective from 1 April 2012:

James Edens, vice president and managing director at CNR International (UK) Ltd, and Gordon Ballard, chairman and country manager of Schlumberger UK Limited, have been appointed the co-chairmen of the organisation, representing, respectively, the operator and contractor communities.

The new vice co-chairmen are Trevor Garlick, regional president North Sea at BP, and John Pearson, managing director of AMEC Group.

Robin Davies, vice president – HSEQ & business improvement at Subsea 7, has been appointed honorary treasurer.

All were previously serving on the Board, Mr Davies and Mr Ballard as contractor co-chairman and vice co-chairman respectively, and have already made valuable contributions to its activities.

Malcolm Webb, Oil & Gas UK’s chief executive, said: “Oil & Gas UK is fortunate to be able to rely on individuals of such high calibre to take on these important roles. It is of great benefit to our organisation and the whole industry that senior executives such as these are willing to take on this extra commitment for the sector.”

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Edens said: “I am pleased to take on the role at this crucial stage in developing improved relationships with Government. We have seen the benefit of collaborative efforts, both within industry and across government recently, and I look forward to maturing these, ensuring that the industry demonstrates responsible operations while maximising economic recovery of oil and gas from the basin.”

Mr Ballard added: “I look forward to working, together with James Edens and the rest of the Board of Directors, on behalf of this important industry and its high technology supply chain, which employs hundreds of thousands of highly skilled people right across the UK.

Mr Webb thanked those leaving the Board, either because under the organisation’s rules their maximum period of tenure has come to an end or because they have moved on to different roles.

He said: “As operator co-chair for the last two very demanding years, Paul Warwick of ConocoPhillips has been an outstanding chairman and on behalf of the whole industry, I thank him for his absolute dedication to that role. Dennis Clark of OGN Group has now completed five years of distinguished service, two of which were spent as honorary treasurer, and Phil Oldham of Nexen Petroleum U.K. Ltd is also to be thanked for his contribution on the Board and as operator vice co-chair. The Board has also benefitted greatly over recent years from the involvement of Jim House of Apache North Sea Ltd, including in his role as chairman of the UK’s Oil Spill Prevention and Response Advisory Group. Like Dennis, Jim was one of the members of the original Board of Oil & Gas UK who has now sadly reached the maximum number of years’ service and so, under our rules, must stand down.

Mr Webb concluded: “The officers and members of the Board of Oil & Gas UK work in pursuit of Oil & Gas UK’s three strategic objectives, namely to maximise the recovery of the UK’s oil and gas resources, to promote the long term sustainable future of our industry’s supply chain in the UK and to generally raise awareness of this great British industry, which is the UK’s largest industrial investor and a leading centre of excellence within the global oil and gas industry.

Oil & Gas UK is keen to ensure that its Board of Directors is truly representative of the UK upstream oil and gas industry. Our rules require that the membership of the Board is regularly reviewed and rotated to maintain and enhance the association’s position as the leading representative body within the sector. In light of the growth in our membership and workload, the size of the Board has been increased from 16 to 22 members and may be expanded further to 24 members. I am delighted to say that interest in joining the Board remains high, which bodes well for the future, and we will try to ensure that all Council members who are able and willing to serve on the Board have an opportunity to do so over time.

Oil & Gas UK is the leading representative organisation for the UK offshore oil and gas industry. Previously known as UKOOA (when it was exclusive to operator members, of which it had 32), it changed its name and constitution in 2007 to become Oil & Gas UK and opened its membership to all companies working in the UK offshore oil and gas industry. Its growing membership, which now numbers 230, comprises approximately 50 operator and 180 contractor companies ranging from major global companies to SMEs.
