RWE Dea Wins Award for Its 'North Sea Gold' Documentary

RWE Dea AG won the Silver Award at this year’s WorldMediaFestival for the documentary “North Sea Gold”. The film realised by Steinlein & Partner Filmproduktion last year, documents life and work on Germany’s only oil drilling and production platform Mittelplate located at the southern edge of Schleswig-Holstein’s Wadden Sea tidelands.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of oil production from Mittelplate, the significance of domestic crude oil and the responsible work in an ecologically sensitive environment was visualised in impressive images and footage. The announcement of the winners of the WorldMediaFestival 2013 took place within the scope of an official prize-giving session held in Hamburg yesterday (Wednesday).

To celebrate our 25th year of production, our aim was to present to the public at large how oil production can be implemented in an ecologically sensitive region. In doing so, apart from the technical features and the safety concept that has proved its worth for many years now, in particular the emotional and economic significance of Mittelplate for humankind and the region are to be emphasised,” said Uwe-Stephan Lagies, Head of Corporate Communications at RWE Dea AG.

“North Sea Gold” is not merely a depiction of a high-tech facility – the film lives on the personal perspective of the people who work on Mittelplate and live in the surrounding region. “In addition to the technical know-how, we especially wanted to portray the spirit, the sense of commitment and the human qualities of the staff members engaged there,Lagies explained. Accordingly, the protagonists are given a personal say, presenting their ideas, thoughts and opinions in this film. This is underscored by the imagery as such: sometimes impressionistic and very poetical, sometimes sturdy and absolutely clear.

The WorldMediaFestival was established in the year 2000 and presents awards for outstanding solutions in corporate film, television, the Web, Web TV and print productions on an international scale.

Germany’s biggest crude oil reservoir is developed by means of very widely deviated wells drilled from onshore and from the drilling and production island of the same name (Mittelplate). The operator is RWE Dea AG, and Wintershall Holding GmbH is a partner to this joint venture. The Mittelplate drilling and production island is conspicuous for a high degree of technical innovation and for a unique safety concept throughout the world. It is considered to be an exemplary project and role model on an international scale for environmentally compatible extraction of feedstocks.
