Statoil Commences Drilling of PL265

Statoil Petroleum AS (Statoil) on friday started the drilling of exploration well 16/2-12 targeting the Geitungen structure. The well is located in licence PL265, between the Johan Sverdrup discovery and the 16/2-9S Aldous Major North discovery in the Norwegian North Sea.

The main objective of the well 16/2-12 is to prove the presence of oil bearing Jurassic sandstones similar to the Johan Sverdrup discovery.

The planned total depth is 2,060 metres below mean sea level. The well will be drilled with the drilling rig Ocean Vanguard and the duration is expected to be 40 days.

Ocean Vanguard is operated by Diamond Offshore with an operations office in Stavanger and technical and operational support from the company’s headquarters in Aberdeen.

The facility is registered on the Marshall Islands with Det Norske Veritas as classification society.

Partners in PL265 are Statoil (operator) with 40 percent interest, Petoro (30 percent), Lundin Petroleum (10 percent) and Det norske oljeselskap ASA (20 percent).
