DONG Energy to Focus Its Demonstration Activities on Wind Turbine Testing

DONG Energy has decided to focus the company’s demonstration activities within wind turbine testing in Frederikshavn and Gunfleet (UK), and has consequently discontinued its demonstration project near Kappel on Lolland.

Recent years’ technological development in the wind industry, with the development of larger wind turbines specifically for offshore use, underpins DONG Energy’s development of offshore wind projects, where the costs of generating energy from offshore wind turbines need to be reduced.

Recent years’ technological development of wind turbines that are larger and designed specifically for offshore use is interesting for DONG Energy, as offshore wind power is a key part of our overall strategy to generate clean energy. We have therefore decided to focus the demonstration of the wind turbines of the future at our offshore sites in Frederikshavn and Gunfleet,” says Per Hjelmsted Pedersen, Senior Director in DONG Energy.

In order to focus its demonstration activities in wind energy, DONG Energy has decided to discontinue its project near Kappel. Work on a master plan for the demonstration project near Kappel has been underway for more than eight years; however, a definitive master plan is still not in place.

It has been a very protracted development process, and the basis for performing the tests near Kappel that we had originally planned no longer exists. We have therefore discontinued the project to allow us to focus on our other demonstration activities,” says Per Hjelmsted Pedersen.

The 24 wind turbines to be dismantled as part of the project near Kappel will still be dismantled.
